Post-Abuse Survival

Surviving Narcissistic Abuse leaves scars others don’t see.

Scars may leave a mark, but they also build strength.

“It was not until after I discovered that ‘narcissist’ meant that I realised just how many of them there are, and how many victims they create. Whatever I can do to help others falling into the traps I was caught in, I will do. It will not change what I went through, but at least it may serve to help others to avoid them experiencing what I did.”

Too often we hear people saying “It’s their own stupidity that they fell into the trap”, or “Why didn’t they just walk away?”.

Many people endure narcissistic relationships for being encouraged to believe exactly these types of reasons. Maybe it’s all in their imagination, and it’s not as bad as it really is.

Personally, I told several people what was happening. Some relayed it onto the other person, only for it to be used as a weapon that “No-one believes you”, or being treated with disbelief that the abuser couldn’t really be all that bad, as they seemed fine to them.

Those that did begin to see the truth began to distance themselves becauseof fear of being drawn into the trap of someone as vindictive.

In later years, even social workers who I reached out to for help responded with “It that really had happened, that would have been terrible”, demonstrating that they were caught upnin the lies of the narcissist, against which I never stood a chance, costing me my children, or risking tearing them apart even further.

Survivors all have horror stories that make toes curl, and blood boil. The fact that it can go unpunished, even rewarded in broad daylight is a shocking revelation to everyone victimised by a narcissist, with no-one really appreciating it, until it happens to them.

The fact is that anyone can fall into the trap, as the narcissist often plays on the empathy of others to set their first trap.

There are many examples which show how people can be caught in traps. These are used for illustration, to show how easily a narcissist could use similar tactics to get into a position of oercive control over someone, wearing down their will-power to fight against what they know to be wrong.

Too often we hear people saying “It’s their own stupidity that they fell into the trap”, or “Why didn’t they just walk away?”. The fact is that the first form of abuse of a narcissist if that of trust, allowing them to get close, followed by emotional abuse allowing them to confuse, followed by physical & emotional abuse, in order to humiliate and create fear.
This is done by both men and women, with women threatening violence to men because they know the men won’t dare hit back, or because the women will have the charged with violence for daring to defend themselves.

Surviving a Narcissist Takes Bravery

Anyone who has ever been victimised knows that giving in to a narcissistic manipulator was always a bitter choice with no other options in sight.

Trapped between a rock and a hard place, you choose the least painful option, in order to maintain sanity and some form of dignity, hoping for a chance to escape on some other day.
Knowing just how their wrath holds no bounds, the threats of destroying everything of meaning to you, such as taking away your children, your livelihood, or destroying your family without hesitation or mercy, you see no option other than damage to the ones you love.

Yet too often people are almost forced to take their own lives, or make drastic decisions, under the illusion of choice, because they fail to realise the true implications to those left behind, while under the control of the narcissist.

Shame of being trapped in a seemingly self-created world of pain, almost invisible to those around us, many feel the sense of being alone while in full public view, unable to escape, and under constant threat of consequences too extreme for others to appreciate.

Escape takes confidence that there is another option.

Escape takes the strength to go on, at a time that all strength seems to have been zapped away.

Escape takes bravery, when self esteem is so low we feel worthless to even try.

Escaping the clutches of the coercive cotrol of a narcissist is often almost impossible alone.

RespectFor.Me is here to direct you towards the help and support needed to make those vital steps to escape the every crushing grip of the fly trap.

You’re not alone

It may seem impossible, and there’s usually no painless way through it, but escape is possible for everyone.

The narcissist relies upon having control, using threats. We also know that the threats are very very real.

So what are the options?

Your have a life ahead

In the words of Winston Churchill “ “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

No-one understands the threat that a seemingly reasonable narcissist can hold over someone other than those under their control.

Escape is never easy. Subject to threats, and associated consequences, the difficulty can be exponentially harder.
Many of us contemplate running away and hiding, willing to turn our backs on everyone and everything just to escape further pain from the threat of coercive control.
But we can’t turn out backs on our families, our children, or others truly close to us.

We may consider ending our lives, only for true loved ones left behind to pick up the pieces, while the narcissists either revel in the level of control they have demonstrated, or simply are unphased demonstrating their real lack of any genuine empathy towards you.

Giving in to those thoughts simply supports how narcissists can get away with murder if we continue to let them.

Instead, escape comes in different ways.

Until just a few years ago, coercive control was legal in the UK. There are many, including a number who have helped establish RespectFor.Me, who have lost everything simply because it was not illegal for a narcissist to use this very real threat, often with the blessing of the UK court system.

Thankfully, albeit slowly, times are changing, and there are more & more cases where coercive control is being identified as a weapon against the victim.

Escape isn’t easy, but is possible, with a strong plan, and a strong enough determination.

Just remember you’re far from alone.
